Funding Opportunities
Many graduate students apply for research fellowships for
the prestige and to help supplement their stipend and provide
money for travel and other resources. The Duke Office of Research
Support has the most comprehensive listing of fellowships
that are available for graduate students but a few of the
fellowships most commonly applied to are listed below.
Office of Research Support
This comprehensive website can successfully help graduate
students locate funding for their research, study, or projects.
The page provides links to many funding agencies and can help
you figure out when and how to apply for both internal and
external funding. The site also includes useful funding search
tools and guides on how to write proposals.
NIH
National Individual Research Service Award
The Kirschstein-NRSA program helps ensure that a diverse
pool of highly trained scientists is available in adequate
numbers and in appropriate research areas to carry out the
Nation’s biomedical and behavioral research agenda.
For individual predoctoral fellowships, NIH ICs have differing
requirements. Thus specific PAs and RFAs should be consulted
for guidance. Individuals must have received, as of the
activation date of their Kirschstein-NRSA pre-doctoral
fellowship award, a baccalaureate degree and must be enrolled
in and training at the postbaccalaureate level in a program
leading to the award of a Doctor of Philosophy of Science
(Ph.D. or Sc.D.) or a combined clinical degree and Ph.D.
degree such as M.D./Ph.D.
NSF
Graduate Research Fellowships
The National Science Foundation (NSF) solicits applications

master's or doctoral degrees in the following fields supported
by NSF: engineering; mathematical sciences; computer and information
science and engineering; chemistry; geosciences, physics and
astronomy; psychology; life sciences; and behavioral and social
sciences. Applicants must be near or at the beginning of their
graduate study. In most cases, an individual has three opportunities

must be submitted by the dissertation supervisor. Citizenship:
unrestricted. Deadline: Usually early August, check website
for actual deadline.
Women in
Science
Sigma Delta Epsilon (SDE) and Graduate Women in Science
invite applications for three SDE/GWIS fellowships (SDE,
Eloise Gerry, and Vessa Notchev Fellowships) and the Eli
Lilly Travel Award in support of scientific research done
by women. Citizenship: unrestricted. Deadline: Usually early
