Fred Dietrich, Molecular Genetics & Microbiology

The focus of research in our laboratory is the genomics of fungi. Recent completion of the genomic sequence of multiple fungal genomes makes it now possible to identify mechanisms of gene regulation, mechanisms of pathogenicity and to understand the wide diversity of lifestyles and biochemical abilities among the fungi. Through our role as a part of the Duke Center for Genome Technology we are involved in the sequencing of C. neoformans as well as the updating of the sequence of S. cerevisiae. Also through the Center for Genome Technology we are developing microarrays to characterize the diversity of the C. neoformans population. The goal is to characterize the diversity of both environmental and clinical isolates to try to identify characteristics important for pathogenicity.
