The Duke CMB Program is an interdepartmental umbrella program that covers all areas of biomedical sciences. The overall goal of the program is to prepare students for productive careers in modern cellular and molecular biology. With the explosion of modern biology in today’s world, our graduates have taken many different career paths, including faculty positions in research-intensive or teaching universities/colleges, scientists in government and industry labs, positions in science policy and management, and science-related professions within writing/publishing and law. As a training program, we seek to provide all students with the opportunity to develop common skills necessary for success in these varied careers: a broad knowledge in the subject field, the ability to think critically and independently, and just as importantly, a strong sense of responsibility for their own success and future career. Students also obtain more specialized training in particular disciplines by affiliating with one of the participating PhD-granting Departments or Programs once they have chosen their thesis mentor.
