  2. major and related courses,
  3. training in the Responsible Conduct of Research,

  5. continuous registration,
  6. prelimary examination,

  8. PhD final examination.

Occasionally, a CMB student who does not complete the PhD will leave with a Masters degree. The formal requirements for the Duke Masters degree are as follows:

  1. A minimum of 30 units of credit registration, at least 24 of which must be graded.
  2. Continuous registration.
  3. A master's exam.

In addition, many departments have further requirements, such as a thesis or other formal written exercise.

Training in the responsible conduct of research (RCR)

ALL matriculating PhD students at Duke University are required to participate in a specified number of hours in RCR training as a formal requirement to obtain the degree. Each PhD student must attend ONE of the three Fall Orientation RCR Workshop programs (including the Ethics Retreat) AND participate in at least three supplementary RCR Forums within the first three years of his/her program to meet the number of training hours required for the degree.

Grades

Grades in the Graduate School include A, B, C, and F. A grade of incomplete (I) is occasionally used when some portion of a student's work is lacking, for an acceptable reason, at the time the grades are reported. A grade of F in a major course normally occasions withdrawal from a degree program not later than the end of the ensuing semester or term; a grade of F in any other course occasions at least academic probation.

Filing the Intention to Receive Degree Form

On or before January 25 for a May degree, on or before July 1 for a September degree, on or before November 1 for a December degree, and at least one month prior to the final examination, the student must file online the intent to receive degree form. The declaration of intention presents the title of the thesis or specifies alternative academic exercises on which the degree candidate will be examined. The declaration must have the approval of both the Director of Graduate Studies in the major department and the chair of the student's advisory committee.
