The great strength of the Duke CMB program is its broad scope. We offer specializations in essentially every area of modern cell and molecular biology, including:

  • structure-function relationships of nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids;
  • DNA replication and nuclear structure;
  • cell membranes, motility, and cytoskeletal elements;
  • development and differentiation;
  • receptors and signal transduction;
  • regulation of transcription and translation of genetic information;
  • development and function of the nervous system;
  • regulatory events in the immune system.

During the first year, CMB students rotate through their choice of several labs throughout the program. By the end of the first year, students choose their PhD research mentor and then affiliate with an appropriate PhD-degree granting Department/Program from the following list:
